“Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19).
Children have a wonderful capacity to learn, and they need to know about Jesus just as much as adults do. When children understand about Jesus’ love for them, it helps them face their fears; it helps them face problems with their friends and issues at school.
The Bible tells parents to teach the Word of God to their children. There are wonderfully simple ways to do this.
1. Pray as a family before every meal. Let your children take turns thanking God for the food.
2. Pray with each child individually at night. Encourage them to share their thoughts and problems with Jesus. They will learn to know Jesus as a friend.
3. Bedtime is a good time to read Bible stories to your children. Carefully choose the stories you read to them. Avoid difficult-to-understand stories, and help your child see how to apply the principles of these stories to his or her life.
Another wonderful way to teach the Word of God to your child is through music. There are many good Scripture choruses you can teach. If you have a particular verse you want them to learn, and you do not know a melody that features that verse, just make one up.
Use a nursery rhyme or other happy tune and use the Scripture instead of the regular words. It will get into your child’s mind and stay there.
