Does God Take Marriage Seriously?

“The wayward wife… who has left the partner of her youth and ignored the covenant she made before God…her house leads down to death” (Proverbs 2:16-18).

The other day, I was reading the Bible and looking for a loophole. My friend is stuck in a difficult marriage and she wants out. Her husband is hard to live with, her financial situation is tough and she thinks she has found someone else.

More and more, we see families disintegrate into separations and divorces. Most marriages can never measure up to the hopes people have for them and when it gets too hard, human beings want out. However, the Bible does not have a loophole when it comes to marriage. It is strict about what it says concerning the marriage covenant. When we get married, God takes it very seriously.

Many times we may be tempted to leave a difficult marriage. Life is stressful. TV soap operas tell us to not settle for anything except the most romantic lover, so if we believe their philosophy, our hearts may try to turn us to someone else.

God can help us defeat the temptation to split up our families. He can hold us. When we do not have the willpower to turn from temptation, God can give us His strength. He can be our companion when we are lonely and our husbands neglect us. He can help us to stay on the path of life. He can even give us joy as we do so!

When you are tempted to leave your husband for another, remember this: God takes your marriage very seriously. He wants you to succeed in it, and He will always help you when you ask.
