Clothe Yourself with Humility

“Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5

Meditation: The Lord seeks men with humble hearts, men who will submit and serve Him only. The problem is that there doesn’t seem to be too many humble men around any longer. Many today bristle at the idea that they should submit to authority. Be submissive to older men? Young men today don’t feel the need to submit to any authority. Why should they? They’ve been taught through words and deeds to question any authority and live their lives according to their own agenda. God seeks humble men. But very often, He finds self-centered, proud, and even arrogant men in our society today.

Men need to clothe themselves with humility because God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble. Humility is not fashionable today. Many men have taken their questioning of authority to the extreme by even questioning God and His Word. They will not submit to any authority and even question God’s Word when it doesn’t fit what they desire or want. Many of us have a wrong view of humility. We think that it means to become a cowardly, inadequate man who will take anything from anyone. That is not the Biblical definition of humility. It is not the belittling of oneself, but the exaltation of others, especially God. When we die to self to serve others and submit ourselves to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, we exhibit humility. Humility is something the Lord requires (see Micah 6:8). It is also something He will bless.

Challenge: Do you clothe yourself with humility toward others? Do you die to self and seek to exalt others, especially God? Do you submit yourself to authority: the law, the church and those over you at work? Clothe yourself with humility and submit yourself to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and experience the grace God will give you.

Thought for the Day: Lord, remind me to remain humble in all circumstances by giving others honor and value.
