Biblical Preaching – Part 2

Using Strong’s Concordance, look up the words in the following exercises. Print clearly all your definitions and responses.

Remember, use the Hebrew dictionary for Old Testament words and the Greek dictionary for New Testament words.

Example: You are looking up the word “triumph” in your concordance.
You find that it’s used nine times in the Old Testament.
You note that this word is only used in two Old Testament books:

Which two?  ______________________and_____________________________

You also note that this word is used in one New Testament book, which is__________________________.

Therefore, you need to know that the two books you listed above are in the Old Testament in order to know that you must look them up, by their number, in the Hebrew dictionary. You also need to know that the other book you listed above is a New Testament book in order to look it up, using Strong’s numbering system, in the Greek dictionary.

Exercise One:
Look up lasciviousness. It’s a New Testament word and thus is only used in New Testament books, such as Mark, Ephesians and Jude.

Write a brief definition of this word:_________________________________________________

Exercise Two:
What is the meaning of wickedness, as it is used in Matthew 22:18?
__________________________________________________________________________

Exercise Three:
Suppose you want to know what a timbrel is. You look it up and find it’s a word only used in three Bible books: what are they?

_____________________   ________________________   _____________________

Are these OT or NT books? ___________________

Exercise Four:
You are reading Romans. You come to a word in 16:1 you don’t understand the word “commend.” You look it up in Strong’s. You note that commend is used in Luke 23 and Acts 20, but since it’s used in different contexts, it has a different shade of meaning.
Explain how you know that each definition is somewhat different:

_________________________________________________________________________

Exercise Five:
You are reading the Gospel of John and come across the word “remit” in 20:23.  How do you know the word is only used one time in the Bible?
Define the word “remit” (Strong’s # 863):
________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

Exercise Seven:
Define “comeliness”  (Old Testament Hebrew):

Exercise Eight:
Define “reprove” from the New Testament dictionary.
Yes, this word is also used in the Old Testament, but you want the New Testament definition, and this word always has the same meaning in the New Testament (#1650):
What is it?__________________________________________________________________

Exercise Nine:
Define “forwardness”  (Proverbs 2:14)
_____________________________________________________________
What is Strong’s reference number for this word in the OT?_____________

Exercise Ten:
Define “murmur”  (John 6:43)
What is Strong’s reference number for this NT word?_______________

Exercise Eleven:

Note: This is an example of word that is spelled the same but has a different meaning in Greek than it does in Hebrew.
How is it defined in Hebrew (Old Testament), using Strong’s #5231?
______________________________________________________________________

Exercise Twelve:
How is “wiles” defined in Greek (New Testament), using Strong’s #3180? _______________________________________________________________________
