“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid’” (Hebrews 13:5, 6 NIV).
What do your children fear? Do they fear darkness, scary monsters, or evil spirits? Do they fear being left alone or being without the material necessities of life?
What do you tell them when you know they are afraid?
If they are afraid of darkness, it is easy to comfort them. You turn on the light. If they are afraid of being alone, you hold them in your arms. If they are afraid of evil spirits, you can share God’s promise found in 1 John 4:4, “The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
But what if your children are afraid of being in want? Of not having enough food? Of not having tuition or supplies for school. What do you do then?
It is best to teach them the promises that God gives us in His Word. In Hebrews 13:5, Paul addressed this need. He was talking to people who needed more money and who were experiencing fear because of their financial need.
Over and over in the Bible, God promises to take care of us and to meet our needs. When your children are afraid, tell them the truth—God will take care of you.
