Valentine was a Christian doctor who went about doing good deeds in imitation of Jesus. He became a good friend and helper to Christians who were being persecuted by the cruel Romans. Eventually, Valentine was imprisoned because of his friendship with believers. He was beheaded February 14.
Christians began to honor him by observing this date each year. As time went on, Valentine and his good deeds were forgotten, and the day became a secular holiday, celebrating feelings of romance, and tokens of love and affections were exchanged by sweethearts, a practice which continues today.
It is good to remember that Valentine’s Day has its roots in Christianity.
