We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:3-6
Meditation: Many men claim to have Jesus in their life, but their actions and behavior tend to demonstrate something very different. Our passage today deals with strongly this issue. It says that we know that we know Him if we obey His commands. We must examine our actions and behavior – do we live life as God commands? Do we obey Him? If not, Scripture says we are liars and the truth is not in us.
We are going to sin and fall short of God’s perfection. We are imperfect people living in an imperfect world. But what is the direction of our lives? Is it moving toward the Lord and walking in His Spirit? Or is it no different than those living in flesh and the world? Brothers, we need to obey God’s Word and demonstrate that God’s love is complete in us. We do this by living in the Spirit and surrendering our lives to Christ day by day and moment by moment.
We know that we are in Him when we walk as Jesus did. This means we walk in obedience to the Father, doing the work the Father has given us to do. It is a life of surrender and humility, dying to self and serving others. Is this difficult? No it is impossible! We cannot walk as Jesus did on our own. There is no program, routine, or set discipline to accomplish this. Again, we must surrender our lives to the Lord, submitting every area, every moment of our lives to Him. We must cling to Him and remain close to Him. Then we will walk as Jesus did.
Challenge: Take time to examine your life. Is it marked by obedience to the Lord? Or is living for the flesh and the world evident in your life? Walk as Jesus did. Surrender every area of your life to the Lord and cling to Him.
Thought for the Day: Lord, help me to cling to You that I might obey You and walk in Your ways each and every day.
