“For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:6).
Each one of us faces times of decision that can determine the direction life takes. These are called turning points.
Who to marry, whether to start a business, whether to have another child, or other serious decisions are all turning point decisions. When I reach turning points, I often need help in determining which way to choose.
In Proverbs, Solomon counsels us, “Listen to advice, accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise.” Getting good advice is a biblical thing to do. The problem is, where does one go for good advice? It is unwise to turn to just anyone.
Here are some principles to consider when you choose to ask someone for advice:
Ask someone who is a Christian. People who are not Christians do not understand the moral issues that believers must consider, therefore they cannot give us complete advice.
Ask someone that you know to be trustworthy. If you ask a non-trustworthy individual, the advice they offer may not be to your benefit.
Ask someone who is knowledgeable about the subject you are inquiring about. For instance, do not ask a teacher to give you business advice or a banker to help you put in a garden. Choose someone who is an expert in the specific area that you need help with.
Good advice can be a blessing that will save you from making the wrong choices during your turning points.
