“In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”  (Ephesians 6:13-15)

“. . . with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”  A warrior without his shield is defenseless.  The Breastplate of Righteousness may protect the torso, but without the shield, a warrior’s hands, arms, legs, and neck are all without any protection.

This creates another problem, because if the enemy uses flaming arrows against God’s warriors, a warrior is not only subject to blood loss but also burns.  In this way, the shield of faith protects the warrior against slowly bleeding to death and quickly burning up.

Our faith is essential to our walk with God.  It protects all the other vital areas of the body, and is extremely versatile in its use.  It can even be used as a weapon if necessary.  For the most part, however, faith protects the soldier from being taken down by the enemy’s weapons and allows him to move forward, even under attack.  We were never meant to be without faith.
