Setting Your Sights

Proverbs 20:25: “It is a trap for a man to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider his vows.”

Who will we live for?  For God, for men, for ourselves?  Paul said we are either slaves to sin or slaves to righteousness.  Every day, in everything we do, we choose either to live it God’s way or our way.  Often our flesh chooses rashly, without thinking, a tendency which Satan has manipulated and used against people.  Our spirit man ought to know the things that he or she lives for, the righteousness that God has called us to.  When we commit to anything, we must be wise about the things we do, to discipline ourselves according to the will of God.  Otherwise, our flesh will trap us into yielding to temptation, succumbing to our own desires instead of God’s.

Luke 9:62: “Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

We cannot expect to serve God with our whole heart when our heart is tied to the past.  We cannot fully know the presence of God with the presence of human desires in us, that pull us away from truly knowing him.  We cannot live in past regrets, nor live in past fleshly glory, which fades with time.  We are a new creation; the old has gone and the new has come (II Corinthians 5:17).
