God Who Sees Me

“She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me’” (Genesis 16:13).

Does anyone know the real you? Does anyone care what you are really like? Or do most people just see you as someone’s wife or mother? Does anyone know your favorite song or favorite color? Does anyone share your secret dreams?

There is Someone who knows you this way. In fact, He knows you so well that the Bible says He knows how many hairs are on your head. God cares about your feelings when you are lonely, discouraged and tired. He cares about sharing your joy when you are happy.

My favorite name for God is one that a slave woman gave to Him. Hagar was running away from her job and her common-law husband when God met her at a well. We know that God was searching for her because the Bible actually uses these words, “The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert” (Genesis 16:7). When God found Hagar, He called her “Hagar, servant of Sarai” (verse 8). He knew her name and what her job was.

God comforted the slave girl and told her to return to her family responsibilities. He told her what the rest of her life would be like. In return, Hagar gave God a beautiful name. She called Him, “the God who sees me” (verse 13).

God does see you. He sees the real you, the person you never let other people see. He is searching for you and He loves you—the REAL you.
